Shipping from India to the US: customs duty and the 10% Section 301 tariff (2026)

For Indian sellers on Etsy, Amazon or their own shop, every order to a US buyer now pays US duty, whatever its value. Most Indian-made goods pay the normal US duty for the product plus an extra 10%. Here is how it works, how much to expect for jewellery, shawls, clothing and incense, and how to build it into a US price, with an official source and date on every rule.

Estimates from our calculator for Indian-made goods, before any carrier fees. US duty is the normal (MFN) rate for the product plus the 10% Section 301 duty on goods of Indian origin. Use the link in each row to change the price, currency (INR is available), shipping or product.

US codes and rates from the official US tariff (U.S. International Trade Commission, checked 24 Oct 2026) and USTR's Section 301 notice (Office of the U.S. Trade Representative). Codes are shown at 8 digits: your declaration needs the full 10-digit code, and your exact product may sit under a different code with a different rate (for example hand-loomed or embroidered textiles, or gold rope chains). Check yours in our HS code lookup links.

Sending by India Post or by courier

With a courier (DHL, FedEx, UPS, Aramex and others), you can usually choose who pays: you prepay the duty (DDP) or the buyer pays it, plus the courier's own clearance fee, on delivery. Ask your courier for its US clearance and DDP fees, and enter them in the calculator, because we only include fees we can cite.

Selling on Etsy to US buyers

Checklist before you ship to the US

  1. Find the 10-digit US code for each product and the duty rate in the US tariff, then add 10% for Section 301 unless your product is exempt.
  2. Country of origin is where the item was made, not where you post it from. Goods made in another country pay that country's US rates.
  3. Use a specific description ("women's woven cotton dress", "silk stole, 100% silk", "sterling silver earrings"), not "gift" or "handicraft".
  4. Never mark a sale, replacement or freebie as a gift: only genuine personal gifts are exempt.
  5. Build the duty (plus any DDP or clearance fee your carrier charges) into a US-only price, or tell buyers clearly that they will pay it on delivery.
  6. Regulated goods (for example cosmetics, food, children's products) may need extra data for US agencies: see the coming change below.

Coming up

US tariff rates have changed several times since 2025 and can change again, for example if a US–India trade deal is put into effect. We record every change in the change log. Also selling to the UK? See India to UK: duty, VAT and the UK–India trade deal. Buyer returned an order? See international returns and duty refunds.
